The character of Hans Gruber is based on Anton Gruber from Roderick Thorp's 1979 thriller Nothing Lasts Forever. Screenwriter Steven E. de Souza has confirmed in interviews that John McClane was always intended as the hero, and the screenplay was never written with Gruber as the protagonist. Conceived initially as a mercenary, the character required re-thinking after Rickman was cast following his Broadway run in Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Producer Joel Silver saw Rickman and insisted on his casting despite initial reluctance. Rickman suggested key changes, such as having Gruber wear a suit instead of terrorist garb to reflect his professionalism. The production team even added the scene where Gruber pretends to be an escaped hostage after discovering Rickman could speak with a convincing American accent. Although Rickman did not view Gruber as a villain, seeing him merely as someone pursuing what he wants in life, the character became a breakthrough role that brought Rickman overnight fame.

Gruber's plan involves holding an office building hostage to steal $640 million in negotiable bearer bonds. As the mastermind, he maintains total control until New York police officer John McClane begins dismantling his operation. The tension peaks during the final confrontation on the rooftop. To film Gruber's death scene, visual effects supervisor Richard Edlund and director John McTiernan used a blue screen effect to composite Rickman falling about 20 feet against a background plate of the plaza. Director John McTiernan had to convince Rickman to perform the stunt, which was recorded twice; the first take was used because it captured a genuine look of fear. Even though Rickman knew he would be dropped, accounts state he was released a few seconds sooner than anticipated, intensifying his expression of surprise as he fell from the building.
